Founded in 1985 by Arnold Germishuys and Martin Badenhorst, NIS has served the Mpumalanga community and beyond for almost four decades, creating and maintaining a strong reputation for completing all contracts on time and within budget.

After 37 years of being the region’s leading steel company, a recent change in ownership has promised to take the business to new heights while still serving its clients throughout Mpumalanga, Limpopo, eSwatini and Mozambique with the exceptional work its customers have come to expect.

When NIS opened its doors in 1985, its team of 10 staff operated out of a 150m² workshop. Today, it has a professional and dedicated workforce of 50 staff. Its workshop is 1 625m², with ample yard space, and it makes use of its own fleet of vehicles and cranes for transportation and erection. In 2010, Arnold Germishuys became the sole owner of the company, growing the business to the region’s leading steel construction company it is today.

From 1985 to 2015, all on-site responsibility fell under the leadership of Mike de Wet, however, in 2015, he indicated his intention to retire. In 2016, Malan Odendaal joined the team with the purpose of taking over from De Wet. His vast background and experience in the steel construction industry saw Odendaal start here with his own set of specialised skills and quickly filled the gap left behind by De Wet.

Since his start with the company in 2016, Odendaal has become the on-site face of NIS, and has handled all site-related issues, dealing with all clients, architects and engineers queries. Odendaal also quickly got to work to implement groundbreaking changes in the workshop, and while this was not part of his job description at the time, it was indicative of his initiative and leadership skills.

Early in 2021, Germishuys made the decision to retire and entered into negotiations with Odendaal and Armin van der Walt for them to take over the company. The terms of the agreement were reached, and from January 2022 Odendaal and Van der Walt became the new owners of NIS.

The duo’s youthful energy and ambition is a clear indication that the company is in capable hands and continues to serve the region as the Lowveld’s leading steel company. In the few months since the takeover, the new owners have already secured a number of new clients and contracts. Recently, Odendaal and Van der Walt were invited to visit Australia for a business trip due to their experience in the agriculture and macadamia industry.

The visit proved extremely valuable, and NIS is currently in negotiations with a number of potential clients in Australia. The agricultural industry has played a significant role in the company’s growth, and it successfully completed numerous large contracts in the citrus and macadamia industry.

NIS has proudly been the steel contractor on all noteworthy macadamia expansions, such as the first phase of Green Farms, followed by the impressive Marquis processing plant and the recently completed state-of-the-art Golden Macadamia processing plant. With an impressive production capacity and a full complement of machinery, equipment and vehicles, NIS has the resources and expertise to tackle the most challenging structural steel projects.

NIS has extensive experience in performing the duties of both principal and subcontractor, and its name has become synonymous with all forms of structural steel in the Lowveld.

Specialising in building farm sheds, workshops, warehousing, shopping centres, bridges and hangars, to name a few, NIS is equally competent when it comes to the installation of cladding and rainwater goods.

The business also has experience and the ability of performing turnkey projects. All NIS structures are unique in the fact that they are custom-designed, thereby ensuring that clients get exactly what they want.

There can be no doubt that under the leadership of Odendaal, the legacy of the company will continue.
